Cruiser Bikes

In the 1930’s bike sales were at their lowest because of the depression; they were considered a luxury that most people could not afford.  However, at a time where money was tight and people were still in need of transportation bikes were what was needed.  Schwinn, a popular bike manufacturer, began to produce a bike that was designed to be sturdy and affordable.  The bike frame resembled that of a traditional motorcycle, however it carried no motor.   It was compiled of a heavy frame with two upper tubes that allows the seat of the bicycle to be placed in a reclining position.  All of these components allowed the bike to be durable and endure much use and abuse.  Not surprisingly this in-expensive bike became extremely popular and soon every bicycle manufacture produced a similar style bicycle at a similar price.  These bikes came to be known as cruiser bikes, and practically every household in the United States owned at least one.

Throughout the 1930’s and 40’s cruiser bikes remained extremely popular.  Their easy and basic functions made them great choices for everyone from children to adults.  However, as most things do, the cruiser fell out of popularity at the beginning of the 1950’s.  New bikes from Europe became popular because they were lighter and surprisingly cheaper.   Since then cruisers have never reached the height of popularity they once held.  However they have become increasingly popular in the beach scenes of both Florida and California.  This is due in part to their unique and classic style and the return of many vintage items.  Upon sight of a cruiser style bike it is apparent that it is of older design, which is extremely popular.  Additionally their comfort is not comparable to other styles of modern bikes.  Cruisers allow riders to sit back and relax as they pedal away to their destination.

Surprisingly the return of the cruiser bike did not come hand in hand with the low prices.  Often times cruisers are more expensive then modern bikes.  This is due, in part, to the age of the style.  Not all cruisers found on the streets were build in the mid 1900’s, most were manufactured within the last decade.  However because the bikes appear vintage they are worth more than modern bikes.  In addition their unique style plays a large part into their cost.  There is no bike that has reflects the cruiser, and you know a cruiser when you see one.  Because they are one of a kind companies have nothing to compete with.  If you want a cruiser you must pay the price.  You can find cruisers available at many bike shops throughout the country, however they are more plentiful closer to the coast.  Additionally many online bike stores have cruisers in stock and ready to be shipped to your door.
