You can often times find cheap bikes for sale at yard sales, at second hand stores, and even in classified ads online or in the newspaper. At some point in life most people will own some type of bike, it is only natural for those people to want to sell them once they aren’t using them. Many bikes are manufactured to be strong and durable and are able to endure many years of use. There is no shame in purchasing a second hand bike, and it will save you money. Here are a few excellent tips to purchasing second hand bikes.
- Decide what type of bike you want in regards of function. If you are looking for a bike to serve as a transportation method then you can look into purchasing cheap bikes that are designed for transportation or even for recreation. Recreational bikes typically have more features then transportation bikes, but they won’t interfere with transportation. However purchasing a transportation bike for recreation is not safe, because they do not have all the features that will allow one to explore safely.
- Once you find a cheap bike that interests you, research the company that manufactured it. Many bikes are manufactured to be durable and long lasting, and these are the types of bikes you want to buy second hand. However, some bikes are made from lower quality materials and designs that make the bike less durable. This type of bike is not one you want to buy second hand because chances are it has already been used a great deal.
- After you find a cheap bike that you have found to be made by a quality manufacture you should focus your attention on the actual bike you intend to purchase. Make sure it is in good condition, the wheels, the frame, the seat all intact and not broken or rusted. Additionally check the breaks the gears and the chain. Metal tends to rust which can lead to many problems with the bikes overall functioning.
- Before you purchase a second hand bike because it is at a relatively low price. Make sure you cannot find a new bike for the same price. Many retailers sell cheap bikes that are brand new. Bikes are relatively cheap to manufacture and because of their popularity they are able to offer many types of bikes for relatively cheap. As with any item, purchasing a brand new bike is better than purchasing one second hand.
