A bicycle is, perhaps, the simplest form of vehicle available worldwide.  It can be used in cities, rural areas, and even the mountains.  Worldwide bikes are the most popular form of transportation available.  It is estimated that there are 3 bicycle motorists somewhere in the world for every one motor vehicle.  Additionally bikes don’t need gas or other fuel and they don’t pollute the air with harmful toxins from exhaust.  They do not cost thousands of dollars; like cars. They also can be repaired quite easily if damaged.  You do not need a license to drive a bicycle and last but not least you don’t run the risk of pricey traffic violations.  All of these things are what make bikes wonderful.  Everyone, at some point in time, will ride a bicycle; whether its ride through the mountains and explore nature or to get to work on a daily basis.

There are five main types of bikes that are popular today in all parts of the world. While some of these bikes may not be cheap they come in handy for traveling, or even for certain hobbies.

A utility bike is the most popular type of bicycles available, it is estimated that 73% of all circulating bicycles are utility bicycles.  These types of bicycles are made with a semi-heavy metal frame and their tires usually have internal tubing.  Utility bicycles can be used for all types of transportation; from cities to small towns.  All utility bicycles are designed to be durable and long lasting.  They are often equipped with a basket in the front or rear for the riders belongings.

Mountain bicycles are extremely popular in rural areas and even for tourists visiting places of rough terrain.  They are designed for off road cycling and are built to withstand the wear and tear of the wild.  Mountain bikes are typically made from heavy metals to promote safety and stability for off road biking.  Additionally their tires are usually thick and have deep tread and various levels of suspension.  Additionally the mountain bicycle was the first to introduce the gearing system that is now common on all types of bikes.

Racing and stunt bikes are becoming more and more popular.  Today they are commonly used for BMX tricks and racing techniques.  They typically are made with a smaller frame and wider deeply treaded tires.  Bike parts can be bought online or in a store. You are more likely to find what you are looking for online, if you are looking for something specific. Racing bicycles must be extremely light weight so racers are able to perform tricks and travel short distances quickly.  Often times their handle bars are lowered for comfort and to create a more aerodynamic riding position.  Additionally, it is not common for racing bicycles to have a gearing system for maximum, natural, efficiency.

Messenger bicycles are another popular type of bike.  They are relatively cheap because they are often stripped town to include only the essential parts of the bike.  Often times messenger bicycles are used in lower budget areas.  They are referred to as messenger bikes because the postal service provided these style of bicycles to their employees throughout the 20th century.  Messenger bicycles are light weight and have no gearing system or additional accessories.

Lastly, recumbent bicycles are designed for comfort and angle the rider on an incline.  These bicycles are designed completely different than any other type of bike and often they use an extra rear triangle in the frame to place the petals lower towards the back of the bike.  Additionally because of the angle of the seat most often the handlebars are located below the seat, requiring the rider to lean forward.  The positioning of the rider on recumbent bikes actually minimizes wind resistance and allows them to travel quickly for long periods of time.
